Do you have a riding lawn mower that is working well but may be showing some signs of wear due to a large amount of rain or an increased amount of mowing? Are you spending more time mowing then you did last spring? Or is your lawn looking ragged and uneven after mowing? Maybe the Honda or Kohler engine you have seems to be lacking in power.
If you are experiencing any of these problems, then it’s time to perform some mid-season maintenance on your riding lawn mower.
Here are a few tips to help keep your mower running properly.
Oil will break down when exposed to heat. This reduces the lubricity of the oil. When the this happens, the engine will begin to wear excessively. Husqvarna, Walker, Kioti, and Grasshopper all recommend the oil be changed in their riding lawn mowers every 40 hours, or at the very least once a year. With the extended mowing season, a second oil change for the year will prolong engine life.
Kohler and Honda engines like a lot of good clean air. If your engine seems sluggish, pull out the air filter and see how dirty it is. If you find a lot of dust and dirt make sure to replace it. You should notice a big improvement in your engine’s performance.
Sharp blades leave a clean, good-looking lawn. If you notice skippers and a ragged look after you are finished mowing, chances are your blades are dull. Inspect your blades and sharpen them as needed to improve performance.
A clean riding lawn mower will perform much better. Keep the deck clean to make sure it discharges evenly. You should also clear any debris off the engine to help it run cooler. You’ll be amazed at how a quick weekly cleaning can vastly improve the performance of your mower.
Don’t have time to perform your own maintenance? Or maybe you’d feel more comfortable having the pros take care of it.
